ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Won and directed one of the eleven awards to redesign Americaneducation in a nation-wide competition. The design is know as Community Learning Centers.
Influential in the design of several experimental schools, Chiron Middle School, SaturnSchool of Tomorrow, St. Paul Area Learning Center, Children's TheatreSchool, Mall of America High School, Minnesota New Country School, EXPOMagnet Middle School and started seven charter schools.
Established and directed The St. Paul Open School, a K-12 research,demonstration school of the St. Paul Public Schools that attracted over20,000 visitors and was described in over 30 articles or books. Theschool won the Pacesetter award from the U. S. Office of Education asbeing educationally effective, cost effective, and worthy ofreplication and is in its 32th year.
As principal, helped reverse the negative image and established twelvemagnet programs as part of a desegregation plan at Central High School,an inner city school for 1,800 students. The school doubled itsenrollment in two years.
As assistant director, helped establish The Career Study Center, St.Paul Public Schools in 1969, a prototype alternative program forat-risk students that became a model for replication.
Established and directed the Staff Development Department of the St.Paul Public Schools which provided training programs for 130administrators and 2600 teachers.
Started the following charter schools: Family Learning Center,Minnesota Technology High School, High School for Recording Arts,Museum School, and several others.
Publishes the ASCD newsletter, the Brain Compatible Learning Networker, 17 years.
Other projects: wrote Five Year Plan for Adult Literacy for St. Paulthat culminated in a state-of-the-art adult learning center; member ofthe Congressionally funded team for the evaluation of charter schools.
Delivered over 300 addresses to workshops, seminars and conferences.
Assisted several foundations and the USDE with evaluating proposals.
Established successful businesses: construction and manufacturing fiberglass canoes.
